Sunday, October 27th, 2024, 10 am to 11:30 am PST

The mission:

Have you heard of Réunion Island, the French gem tucked away in the Indian Ocean, famous for its stunning volcanic landscapes, dreamy beaches, and incredible biodiversity? Well, something intriguing has just shaken things up in the Cité du Volcan (English: Volcano City). This popular museum, one of the island’s top tourist attractions, offers visitors a deep dive into Réunion’s geological history. Recently, it unveiled a new exhibit featuring three small meteorites freshly discovered on the island.

But what does this have to do with our renowned detective Louis, who’s often called upon to solve the most puzzling cases? As it turns out, the museum director, in a panic, urgently reached out to him. The three meteorites have mysteriously vanished under strange circumstances! A nearby samosa vendor even claims to have seen some extraterrestrial-looking figures hurrying away from the museum at dawn.

That was all it took for Detective Louis to gather a team of young investigators, ready to crack this case wide open. The adventure begins!

Réunion Island: A French Gem with a Complex History

Réunion Island is a true French gem located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar. This volcanic island, renowned for its stunning landscapes dominated by Piton de la Fournaise—one of the world’s most active volcanoes—also boasts beautiful beaches, lush tropical forests, and remarkable biodiversity. Its rich history is marked by impressive cultural diversity, shaped by waves of colonization and immigration that have created its unique identity.

First discovered by Portuguese navigators in the early 16th century, Réunion became a French possession in 1642. French colonization began in earnest in 1665 with the arrival of the first settlers, who were accompanied by slaves brought from Madagascar and Africa to work in the sugarcane plantations. This system of slavery left a deep and lasting impact on the island’s history, leaving scars that are still visible in Réunionese society today. Although slavery was abolished in 1848, its social and economic consequences linger, evident in ongoing inequalities and racial tensions.

Despite these darker aspects of its history, Réunion remains closely tied to France as an overseas region. The people of Réunion are French citizens and actively participate in the political and social life of the Republic. This strong connection to France is reflected in the use of French as the official language, although Réunion Creole is also widely spoken in daily life. Réunion’s status as part of France gives the island a unique place in the Francophone world, fostering cultural and linguistic exchanges with other French-speaking countries and regions worldwide.

Beyond its administrative role, Réunion plays an active part in promoting the French language and culture throughout the Indian Ocean and beyond. Its cultural heritage, traditions, and language enrich the global Francophone community, making the island a bridge between Europe and Asia and a shining example of cultural diversity within the French Republic.
