Immersive Tour at the Heart of Lascaux 4

Event Overview

Our virtual Museum Quest program is still going strong in December! We continue to offer children and teenagers virtual tours of exceptional cultural sites around the world. Do you want to travel and (re)discover the French-speaking world in one click? Let’s go!

At the end of 2021, we are offering a unique virtual cultural event: a private virtual tour of Lascaux 4 on December 12 from 9:30 am to 11:00 am (PST). Get ready to go back in time by diving into the heart of the complete replica of the Lascaux cave discovered in 1940 in Dordogne (France). A real gem of cave art and a World Heritage Site, Lascaux will reveal its secrets to participants: How was it discovered? What do the drawings that cover its walls represent? How were they made and what were they used for? When did the Lascaux men and women come to this cave and what was their way of life? Let yourself be transported to these mythical places by a guide who will walk through the site with a camera. The Dordogne has never been so close to home!

Teaching Objectives

Through this event, participants will:

  • Learn basic vocabulary related to cave art and Prehistory.
  • Learn about the discovery of the Lascaux cave and the geographical location of the cave.
  • Develop their knowledge of cave art: What is it? What was it used for? What tools and materials were used?
  • Learn more about the lifestyle of the men and women of Lascaux and what they used the caves for.

CULTURAL POINT

Virtual tour lascaux

Lascaux is a complex of caves in the department of Dordogne in southwestern France. It is one of the most outstanding painted caves of the Upper Paleolithic because of the number and quality of the paintings and engravings discovered (nearly 2000 estimated to be between 19,000 and 17,000 years old). The bone fragments found in the cave are believed to be about 21,000 years old.

Since 1963, the cave has been closed to the public to preserve rock paintings (damaged by carbon dioxide, heat, humidity and other contaminants produced by 1,200 visitors per day). Lascaux 4, a full replica of all the painted areas of the cave, opened in December 2016 to present an impression of the painting’s scale and composition for the public.
