STEM Activity: A Day at Calistoga’s Petrified Forest

(Registration for this activity is now closed)

Teaching Objectives of STEM Activity – French Immersion

Through this STEM Activity with French immersion, participants will:

  • Discover the geological history of Calistoga’s petrified forest and will be able to contemplate Mount St. Helena, the remains of an ancient volcano
  • Understand the process of wood fossilization
  • Acquire knowledge on different geological eras and the history of our planet
  • Have fun in French!

Event Overview

On Sunday, May 22, EFBA’s team is organizing a day full of surprises in a petrified forest to end the school year in style, in French! Participants will be able to stroll through the outdoors and stock up on scientific knowledge while having fun, all in a unique geological site.

For this adventure, we’ll head to Calistoga 1.5 hours north of San Francisco, where the only petrified forest in California dating from the Pliocene (just 3.4 million years ago, that’s all) is found.

Scientific workshops, a treasure hunt and activities in French will fill the hours from 10:30am to 3:00pm. While we take care of your children, take the opportunity to explore the region (discover here 30 activity ideas to do near Santa Rosa).

Fossilization: When wood becomes rock

Under normal circumstances, a tree trunk takes decades or even centuries to decompose. At first, insects take to the tree and burrow in, detaching the first layers of bark and facilitating the passage of other insects and mushrooms. This is also when microbial decomposition sets in. Next, pieces of wood begin to separate from the trunk. Bacteria, fungi, and insects continue to occupy the tree. Finally, the humidification phase begins: the wood crumbles and becomes part of the forest floor.

The Calistoga Forest had a very different fate. 3.4 million years ago, the Mount St. Helena volcano, located 7 miles miles away, violently erupted and broke the surrounding calm. It’s devastating blast knocked down the trees in the area and covered them with a thick layer of ash, depriving them of oxygen. Without air, bacteria cannot grow and break down wood. Thousands of years passed during which water rich in minerals slowly passed through the sediment layer and penetrated the wood. During this long process, the water evaporated and the minerals remained, deposited in the cells and tissues of the trees. This resulted in the creation of entirely fossilized material that preserved the finest details of the wood. This is how our trees were transformed into stone, defying time.
