STEM Program: STEM-VENTURERS

The EFBA team is proud to launch a brand new STEM program: STEM-venturers! We now offer online and in-person activities dedicated to science, technology, engineering and math. Our mission: to awaken the curiosity of children and teenagers and, hopefully, inspire future professionals through fun, unique and quality activities.

One hour of Code or a spell!

Event Overview

At the beginning of November, EFBA will offer a free Halloween-themed Hour of Code, to introduce children aged 8 to 11 to the art of programming – in French, of course! Organized in cooperation with Code for Fun, the goal of this workshop is to spark curiosity and interest in the digital industry for attending girls and boys. As women are vastly underrepresented in computer jobs, we especially want to encourage them to attend; this is the reason why we’ve decided to offer this activity to all families for free.

Activity:

In this interactive one-hour session, children will create their own video game using the “Scratch” platform, while discovering programming fundamentals. All systems go for a bitmapped adventure!

Origin of the Hour of Code

Held each year in more than 180 countries, the Hour of Code has historically taken place in December as a celebration of Grace Hopper’s birthday, an American scientist and mathematician, who was a computer science pioneer. She built the first compiler in 1951 and created one of the first high level programming languages, COBOL

A few words about Code For Fun

Code For Fun is a leader in online and in-person coding programs for kids and teens. Servane Demol, Founder and CEO, believes strongly that computer science and its resulting products have become unavoidable in today’s world. In order to fully prepare new generations to meet the challenges of the 21st century, and to help them become prosperous stakeholders in the global economy, it is imperative that children develop a deep understanding of this field. As of today, Code for Fun has proudly initiated 5,000 students, 50% of whom are girls, to computer science!
