GOALS OF THE CULTURAL FRENCH PROGRAMS

The notion of pleasure and the idea that play provides incredible leverage in learning a language are two core parts of our objectives. Our two cultural programs in French are: “Museum Quest”, fun trips to museums all in French, and “Kids’ Night Out” evening parties full of fun and adventures in French. These two programs are play-based French immersion events. Their aim is not only to increase the frequency and duration of French exposure, but also to vary the language context by broadening the diversity of situations in which the children find themselves called upon to participate, communicate and act. The play-based, engaging form of these programs allows children to increase their personal motivation for learning French and to discover other ways of using the language.

These are not French classes, but leisure activities during which the children will discover many things while having fun and learning French without even realizing it. The main theme of each event is a story or a mission to accomplish. The play-based form of these programs stimulates children to try to understand the action taking place in French in front of them and figure out how they can take part in the adventure that awaits them.

The supervising team of adults is there to help the children understand and participate in the different activities. The adults are exclusively French native speakers, ensuring that the language of communication is French throughout the activities.

The content and sequence of these programs follows a plan devised to guarantee an optimal experience for the children. Each program includes free time for games and a meal. These are occasions for making friends and chatting informally with adults to experience authentic and real communication in French.

CULTURAL PROGRAM TEAM

1

Kid’s Night Out!

At each event, the team is composed of a director and two youth activity leaders. They are all native French speakers and experienced in working with young people. Their main job is to make sure each child feels included and happy. They apply their creativity and inventiveness in full force to take the children on a trip to the land of their imagination, weaving the myriad riches of the French language and Francophone cultures into the activities. Once in costume, they are no longer just hosts, but characters in the action.

Each of the French-native adults chaperoning these outings needs to meet and get to know the children to share with them his or her knowledge and connection with the French language. They guide and support the children in this exploration and the mysterious quest specific to each individual outing.
